iCLA is the most exciting innovation in the development of global liberal arts colleges. The design of the educational program is tuned specifically to prepare students for leadership in our interdependent global economy. In the 21st Century, global citizens must be liberally educated. They must be able to understand the complex dynamics of globalization, collaborate across differences to create novel solutions to global problems, and they require an ethical framework to guide actions and decisions. iCLA promises to provide this kind of education with a kind of clarity of purpose that distinguishes it as a world-wide exemplar.

Do you know who you are? Do you know what kind of world you want to live in? Do you know how you will contribute to that world? The pursuit of the liberal arts at iCLA allows you to pursue these questions with extraordinary faculty and students in small classes in an environment which will help you learn how to listen and help you to develop your analytical and communication skills. With students from around the world you can learn not only about your fellow students and their cultures, but also about yourself. You will spend one year immersed in another culture to help you gain further understanding of yourself and of the richness and complexity of our global world. Friendships you will make will be part of the rest of your life. The ideas and experiences you gain from your pursuit of the liberal arts at iCLA will provide a strong foundation as you move on with your life and careers.iCLA is truly an extraordinary place for you to learn about yourself and the role you can play in the fast moving global world.

iCLA is an exciting project, and I am glad to be involved in it. The school understands that the best college education is a liberal education that develops capacities-such as the love of learning, critical and creative thinking, clear communication, problem-solving, ethical sensitivity, and cultural fluency-that are transferrable to any situation across the workplace and throughout life. Small classes, lots of interaction with excellent teachers, residential community, study-abroad opportunities-iCLA provides all the right opportunities to prepare students for work and for life.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the new International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) at Yamanashi Gakuin University (YGU). The liberal arts focus at YGU is novel in Japan and the association with the University of Stirling, provides opportunities for both institutions to learn from each other and share best practice. Encouraging student and staff mobility is one of the cornerstones of internationalization. Embedding an international dimension through a broad range of courses offered in the English language and focusing on globally transferrable skills, which respect cultural differences through inter-disciplinary study, is vital to the education of world citizens.
At the University of Stirling, one in ten of our students now study abroad, with almost half of these studying liberal arts. Given iCLA's innovative approach the opportunity exists to inspire young people and bring a new and truly international dimension to liberal arts study in Japan. At this very exciting stage in its internationalization journey, it is essential that global partnerships are formed in teaching and exchange; to provide enriching student experiences that enhance global citizenship and employability. As an international advisor, I will share my insights and experiences formed from over 30 years of partnership working with universities worldwide to assist YGU in its ambitious goals.
