Applying to iCLA is an international student is an easy process through our online application system.

Simply follow the steps outlined below.

Application Process

Academic Requirements

All applicants must hold, or be expected to hold upon entry to iCLA, a high school diploma equivalent to a Japanese senior high school graduation, having completed 12 years of education.

It is optional to submit a standardized test or university entrance qualification exam such as the SAT test..

Language Requirements

Non-native English speaking students must demonstrate English language proficiency with a TOEFL iBT score of 76, a TOEFL PBT score of 550, an IELTS score of 6.0 (with no band below 5.5), or by providing an equivalent accepted English language qualification as shown in “Appendix A” of the Application Guidelines. In principle, this requirement is waived for native English speaking students.

There is no requirement for Japanese language proficiency to enter iCLA.

Please prepare the following documents to be submitted through the online application form. Documents in languages other than English or Japanese must be accompanied by a notarized English or Japanese language translation.

  1. A copy of your passport or official photo ID
  2. Miscellaneous achievements – digitally scanned copies of any certificates proving your achievement(s)
  3. A Statement of Purpose
  4. Two recommendation letters
  5. Diploma, graduation certificate, or expected graduation certificate
  6. Academic transcript
  7. Certificate of the results of university entrance qualification examinations or other standardized tests
  8. English proficiency test score

In order to submit your application form, you must pay the application fee of 7,000 JPY.

The application fee can be paid online via Flywire or by Japanese domestic bank transfer. Please see the application guidelines for domestic bank transfer details.

NOTE: The application fee will not be refunded under any circumstances once the payment is made.

Applications are evaluated based on a holistic review of all application documents. An interview will also be conducted as part of the application screening process.

The interview will be conducted either online or by telephone. A specific date and time will be arranged and you will be contacted via the information you provide in your online application form.

The interview will be conducted in English, and will take approximately 20 minutes.

You will be notified of the results of your application via email within the Notification Period.
Confirm your enrollment by clicking “Accept” in your online account.

You must also complete payment of the Enrollment Fee, Tuition (for the first semester), and Facility and Equipment Fees online by the Enrollment Deadline.

Students requiring a Japanese student visa will be contacted to submit the necessary materials after they have accepted their offer of admission. See the “Applying for a Japanese Visa” section for more details.

Applying for a Japanese Visa

After being accepted and enrolling into iCLA, international students must have a visa to study in Japan.

Applications for the ‘Student’ visa will begin after you have accepted your admission offer.

Accept your offer by completing “Offer Response”.

Complete “Payment & Enrollment”. This is where you pay initial fees. It is also where you provide information required for the visa application.

In order to apply for a Japanese student visa, a “Certificate of Eligibility” (CoE) is applied for through the university and issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau.

You will be asked to submit the CoE when you apply for the student visa at your closest Japanese embassy or consulate.

Permanent residents or those who already hold a Japanese student visa valid through the start of the semester in which they are admitted will not need to apply for a visa through the university.

You will be asked to submit the following documents for the application of the Certificate of Eligibility.

When uploading items to your account, please remember that documents in languages other than English or Japanese must be accompanied by English or Japanese translations. All translations must be notarized.

  1. Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) Application Form (Designated form)
  2. Letter of Financial Support
  3. Financial Support Documentation
  • Bank Statement of Financial Supporter
    *Funds of 2,000,000 JPY or more is recommended
  • Certificate of Employment or Income Statement
    *Annual salary equivalent to or greater than 2,000,000 JPY or more is recommended

4. Certificate of Applicant’s Health (Designated form)

In some cases, additional documentation may be requested of applicants. If necessary, applicants will be contacted by the Yamanashi Gakuin Admissions Center. Once you have provided all of the materials needed for your CoE application, we will apply on your behalf.

It usually takes 2 months for the CoE to be issued by the Japanese Immigration Bureau.
