Are you a prospective student wanting to learn more about iCLA?

At our interactive online open campus event, you can:

  • Take part in a live demo lesson with Professor Darren Ashmore on:

The Candle and The Star: The Ancient Roots of Manga

Though the media culture of Japan is not just popular round the world now – perhaps we might say ubiquitous – it is still considered by far too many as a trivia. However, dismissing the colourful and sometimes lurid characters of the medium dismisses also the more than 1000 years of artistic history which underpins said medium. In this discussion we shall explore three key figures from the ancient past of manga history and how their legacy lives on. Dr. Ashmore is a Leverhulme Award winning writer, translator, actor, and anthropologist. He recently featured in Netflix’s docuseries Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan.
