EXHALE: Art Exhibition by Gaku Okata

Gaku Okata is a 4th-year student studying Art at iCLA. A talented student and star of iCLA’s Art Studio, Gaku has also been active in Yamanashi’s artist community as an intern at Gallery AIRY (Artist in Residence Yamanashi).

Gaku held his first solo art exhibition, EXHALE. The exhibit was held from February 21 (Fri) to February 25 (Tue). The significance of the title comes from Gaku’s artist instinct to “create art like exhaling”.

11 of Gaku’s works were on display in AIRY’s gallery space. The variety of mediums and sizes of the works demonstrated Gaku’s talent and versatility as an artist. The art mediums Gaku used to create his works ranged from acrylic paint to spray paint to charcoal.

It is a delight to explore the details in Gaku’s works. Every work is created with such vibrancy and boldness, it is like an explosion of color and personality on the canvas. Each one grabs your attention more than the last.

Gaku also incorporates symbols that reoccur in multiple works. One such symbol is the dragonfly, which can be seen in a picture below.

The exhibition also included a workshop titled Beyond the Doodling. Guests were welcome to join and learn about how they can use their creativity to make artwork. This workshop focused on intuition and free flow of consciousness, and being able to put that expression onto paper.

Gaku will be graduating from iCLA in March.
